Improving Dementia Care: What the Latest CQC Report Teaches Us
As a Health and Social Care Consultant committed to raising standards and delivering compassionate, person-centred care, I welcome the recent CQC Dementia Strategy Report (May 2025). This latest review sheds important light on the real experiences of people living with dementia in England β and what we, as professionals, can do better.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
With people living longer, more of us will either live with dementia or care for someone who does. The CQC reports that nearly half of all people will be affected in some way. This isn’t just a future issue β it’s a present and growing challenge for our care systems.
Key Challenges Identified:
πΉ Understanding Individual Needs
Too often, services donβt fully grasp what good dementia care really means β from ensuring people eat and drink well, to making hospital environments less overwhelming.
πΉ Communication Gaps
Families and carers report poor communication from hospital and care staff. We must improve how we listen, share information, and adapt our language and tone for better understanding.
πΉ Keeping Minds and Bodies Active
Isolation and inactivity are a real risk. Good services support people to stay connected β through trips out, activities, and engaging with their interests and histories.
πΉ Staffing Pressures and Training Gaps
Staff shortages and high turnover make continuity of care difficult. Upskilling our workforce with dementia-specific training must be a top priority.
πΉ Supporting Family and Informal Carers
Family carers often feel overwhelmed. The report highlights the need for services that reassure and relieve carers β showing that loved ones are safe, respected and well cared for.
πΉ Tackling Inequality
People with dementia who also face barriers due to race, language, disability or religion are at greater risk of poor care. The report praises services that tailor care β from using familiar languages to supporting religious practices β but these examples remain too rare.
